Hurricane Debby Response

by WORLD CENTRAL KITCHEN INCORPORATED

Hurricane Debby, which first made landfall along Florida’s Big Bend area as a Category 1 hurricane on Monday morning, has continued its northbound trajectory up the Eastern Seaboard this week. Despite being downgraded from a hurricane, the slow-moving system has unleashed relentless downpours along the majority of the East Coast, leaving a path of flooded neighborhoods, destroyed homes, and knocked out power grids in its wake. WCK pre-positioned our team in Tallahassee before Debby’s initial landfall to assess food support needs as soon as it was safe to do so. In just a few short days, our Relief Team has already distributed over 3,500 meals to families impacted by the storm.

Supported by supplies and ingredients from our distribution center in New Orleans, as well long-standing, local food truck partners in the region, WCK has been able to maximize the reach of our assessment and aid operations, passing out sandwiches and fresh water as we go. Having identified Fort White, FL as the hardest-hit region, our team began cooking comforting, nourishing meals at the local community center where evacuees were directed to shelter. We have witnessed firsthand the power of community in Fort White, as many local recipients take with them warm meals, fresh water, and fruits to distribute door-to-door to their neighbors.
